ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - 12 Stearns County 911 dispatchers were awarded the Medal of Merit for the hard work and attention to detail on the night of the Crossroads Center stabbing spree in St. Cloud.

At a Tuesday ceremony, officials said as the calls started to pour in at 8:14 p.m. on Saturday, September 17th, the five dispatchers on duty worked diligently to get police, fire and EMS to the scene.

Other staff members arrived, not because they were called in, but because they heard what was happening and knew their colleagues would need some help.

Over the next two hours the dispatchers fielded more than 250 incoming calls, of which nearly 100 were 911 calls.

Chief Deputy Bruce Bechtold congratulated the dispatchers, calling them the unsung heroes behind the scenes.

"You're the voice, the guidance, but people rarely see you, so here's your adoring public, they can see you, enjoy you and appreciate you."
