ST. PAUL, Minn. (KNSI) Minnesotans are voting on two proposed revisions to their state constitution after campaigns that generated major donations and provoked heated debates about the role of government in peoples' lives.

One amendment would strengthen the state law against gay marriage by inserting it in the constitution. The other would require people in future elections to show a photo ID to vote.

The marriage amendment has drawn about $16 million in campaign contributions. Supporters say it would keep meddlesome legislators or judges from someday forcing gay marriage on the public. Opponents say such an amendment would put discrimination into the constitution.

The voter ID campaigns have raised less money but sparked equally contentious exchanges about the integrity of the state's voting system.
