ST. CLOUD (KNSI) - St. Cloud Republican and former lawmaker Jim Knoblach has declared his intention to run for State Representative in district 14B, the seat currently held by Democrat Zachary Dorholt.

Knoblach made the announcement on Tuesday through an e-mail to supporters.

“The Legislature needs to stop its big spending ways, such as an unneeded $90 million Legislative Office Building, for which Dorholt voted,” said Knoblach.  “We need to put some balance and common sense back in the Legislature.”

That's the same Capitol renovation project Knoblach himself filed a legal challenge against, but that challenge was dismissed by a Ramsey County judge last month. He's currently getting ready to appeal that judicial decision.

Knoblach says four out of five local lawmakers are freshman legislators, and says his previous experience as a legislator could lead to instant seniority in the house.

“I am running to provide better representation for our area,” said Knoblach.  “Important priorities for our area like adequate funding for special education and English language learning, and bonding for the Convention Center have not been realized. During my time in the Legislature, I successfully authored over $100 million of projects for our area.  The seniority I will have upon returning to the Legislature will help us achieve our legislative needs.”

Knoblach was elected to the Minnesota House in 1994, and served six terms until 2006, when he declined to run for re-election. He chaired the House Capital Investment Committee for four years, and the House Ways and Means Committee for four years during that time.

Knoblach was born and raised in Dictrict 14B and graduated from Apollo High School. He holds a business and economics degree from Saint John’s, an M.B.A. from Harvard and a Masters in American Government from Georgetown.
