SAUK RAPIDS, Minn. (KNSI) Sauk Rapids police officers will soon be carrying new handguns when they're out on patrol.

Police Chief Perry Beise says the .45 caliber semi-automatic pistols they've had for about ten years are due for routine maintenance and replacement parts that wear out over time.

So the department will be purchasing new pistols, holsters and magazine pouches at a cost of just under $4,000. The money will come from the Narcotics Forfeiture Fund.

Beise says it's imperative that an officer's pistol does not fail during a deadly force incident, and because the cost of ammunition for the new nine-millimeter weapon is less expensive, the change will pay for itself over time.

He says the department will get $300 dollars each for the old handguns they're trading in.
