ST. CLOUD (KNSI) - The St. Cloud City Council will continue to study the impact of a large-scale quarry expansion.

The council held a work study session on Monday night to evaluate a condition use permit for Cold Spring Granite, who want to develop a 30 acre, 300-350 ft. deep Charcoal-3 quarry, adjacent to their current site in southwest St. Cloud.

St. Cloud city planner Matt Glaesman tells KNSI, while quarrying operations have been at the site for decades, this expansion request kick-starts a mandatory enviromental assessment, called an EAW.

Glaesman says, during the 30-day comment period for the EAW, the council received 9 responses from the public regarding how the project will affect the neighborhood in terms of construction noise and impact on wildlife.

Now, Glaesman says the council plans to use those responses to decide how much more study is needed before the project gets the green light.

If approved, work on the project will extend over a 25-30 year period.

The council will revisit the issue during their July 29 meeting.

The Zoning Board of Appeals will have the final say on the project - a decision expected in August.
