ST. MARTIN, MN (KNSI) - The Stearns County Board of Commissioners has come halfway in meeting an annexation request by Monitor Tire Recycling of St. Martin Township.

Monitor Tire asked that five acres of land north of their business be re-zoned from agricultural to commercial. They want to use the property to store trucks and trailers. But commissioners on Tuesday approved rezoning just two-and-a-half acres.

The five acre request drew opposition from neighbors worried about an increase in truck traffic and the impact it would have on nearby wetlands.

Monitor's tire plant has been in business since 1988. It recycles scrap tires into shredded material that can be used as an asphalt additive for road construction work.

The county board will consider a conditional use permit for Monitor at an upcoming meeting.
