ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Work on a 3.2 mile extension of the Lake Wobegon Trail from St. Joseph to Waite Park has begun.

Ben Anderson with Stearns County Parks says the extension will be from St. Joseph to Waite Park and will connect to other pedestrian trails in St. Cloud.

"The major goal of this is to provide that safe route to get people from the west side of St. Cloud to the east side via an alternative mode of transportation," Anderson said.

The extension will run from the Coborn's off Highway 75 in St. Joseph to Rivers Edge Park in Waite Park.

The $4.9 million project was funded primarily through a Legacy Amendment Grant, with help from a Federal Transportation Alternatives Program.

Stearns County, St. Cloud, Waite Park and St. Joseph each kicked in $200,000.

Officials say the trail extension should be open by May or June, but construction crews may run into delays while building a bridge over the Sauk River.

When it's finished outdoor enthusiasts will be able to travel from Sauk Centre all the way to St. Cloud.
