SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) South Dakota and North Dakota will have seats at the table when Congress attempts to negotiate a new farm bill.

South Dakota Rep. Kristi Noem and North Dakota Sen. John Hoeven have been named conferees for the talks. Noem, who was appointed on Saturday, is the first House member from South Dakota since 1996 named to the farm bill committee.

Noem says it's a "very positive thing" for South Dakota farmers to be represented in negotiations.

The Senate voted in June to pass its version of the farm bill. The House had split it into two separate bills, one for farm programs and one for nutrition programs. Those bills were later recombined.

Hoeven says it's important to pass a bipartisan farm bill by the end of the year.
