SARTELL, Minn. (KNSI) - A significant stretch of Sartell's Pinecone road moved a step closer to a facelift.

At their regular Monday night meeting, the city council moved unanimously to approve a feasibility study on rehabbing the portion of the road stretching from 2nd Street South to 15th Street North.

City Engineer Mike Nielson tells KNSI the roadway has undergone rapid and noticable deterioration with the onset of winter. Cracked joints are rising up on the road, causing what Nielson describes as a "very rough ride."

The approved feasibility study will be performed by the city's engineering department. It comes into play to evaluate different ways to fix the road - either resurfacing or completely reconstructing it - so the city gets the most for it's money.

Nielson says it's a critical issue - due to business and residential growth, the amount of traffic on that stretch of Pinecone has as much as tripled since its inception.

"The traffic counts in 1995 were just under 1,600 cars a day with a 20 year projection with just about 2,600 cars a day," Nielson explains. "In 2011, MnDOT counted about 6,200 cars a day. So, the traffic projections have been far exceeded and led to a premature failure of the roadway."

Nielson says, now that the council has approved the Feasibility study, a team of experts will analyze the best and most cost-effective repair methods.

The city hopes to begin work on Pinecone Road as soon as this spring.
