ST. CLOUD, MN (KNSI) - It's the centerpiece of any celebration of Independence Day here in St. Cloud and the finishing touches are being put into place for Wednesday's huge city fireworks show along the banks of the Mississippi.

It is the 65th year for St. Cloud's 4th of July fireworks extravaganza, once again, those pyrotechnics, nearly $55,000 worth this year, will all be launched skyward from a barge in the Mississippi River. Spectators should get an eyeful from any of a number of great locations along Wilson and Hester parks.

St. Cloud fireworks commissioner Tom Richardson said everything's being planned out for Wednesday night's big show and it does take some very careful preparation.

"We're marking the buoys, the exact launch location, we've actually got them GPS-ed in," Richardson said. "The fire marshal is out on the river marking buoys. It is an extremely strong current. So we are taking care of a few other things in the river then we will move the barge."

Moving of the barge should happen sometime Tuesday morning.  And thanks to new additions to one St. Cloud landmark, Wilson and Hester parks aren't the only places to get a good look at the show.

"The hospital has great views with that new expansion. We were down on the river yesterday. Beautiful, just beautiful," Richardson said.

Blastoff should start around 10 p.m. The St. Cloud Municipal Band will perform in Hester Park before the show and they're expected to be accompanied by members of a German delegation from St. Cloud's sister city of Spalt.

The 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 194th Armor Regiment will serve as the honorary commissioners, that battalion just completed a one-year deployment in Iraq.

Donations can be sent to the 'Fireworks Fund" at St. Cloud City Hall or go online at to make sure the extravaganza continues.
