ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Governor Mark Dayton's supplemental budget proposal calls for extending rail service to St. Cloud.

The governor's proposal would allocate $3 million for a six month demonstration of rail service from Minneapolis to St. Cloud to complement current service on the Northstar line.

The governor's office says the demonstration would allow the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the community an opportunity to demonstrate the need for continued rail service between the two communities.

Dayton's supplemental budget also calls for $850,000 to conduct an engineering study on extending Northstar service to St. Cloud.

The Democrat says the study would update a 2010 report on engineering costs and projected ridership to determine the estimated cost of extending the service.
