FORT SNELLING, MN (AP) - Authorities have exhumed the remains of a Minnesota veteran from a desecrated grave at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
A maintenance worker discovered a large amount of dirt disturbed in and around the grave Thursday morning.
Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek says the body belonged to a World War Two veteran who was buried in the 1970s. But he would not release the man's name.  Stanek also would not say if the casket had been tampered with or the body disturbed.  The headstone was not damaged.
After getting permission from the man's family, authorities had the body exhumed and taken to the medical examiner's office for further examination.
Stanek says desecrating a grave at a national cemetery is not only a disturbing crime, it's disrespectful to all veterans and their families.
