ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Minnesota gun rights advocates are lining up behind modest revisions to the state's gun laws in the face of more sweeping changes.

The move could give lawmakers an opening to make some progress on a charged issue this year. A bill expected to become public next week has bipartisan support.

Sponsors told The Associated Press it contains some provisions from a further-reaching gun violence package that debuted Thursday. But the new bill doesn't change state law to require background checks for all firearm purchases.

Many rural Democrats won't support taking a harder line on guns, making it an attractive alternative.

The new bill targets so-called "straw purchases" that channel guns into the hands of ineligible people and embraces measures helping county attorneys crack down on illegal gun owners.
