ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - One of St. Cloud's newest solar gardens could be on cemetery land.

The city council approved setting a public hearing for a 1-megawatt solar garden in the northeastern portion of the Assumption Cemetery property, 2341 Roosevelt Road, on November 14th.

The solar garden would be run by Novel Energy Solutions of Rochester on behalf of Assumption-Calvary Cemeteries.

3,600 solar panels would take up about 7 to 9 acres. The proposed area has no burial plots in it.

The company is requesting to rezone the Assumption Cemetery from a single-family residential district and highway commercial district to a planned unit development.

City staff are recommending approval of the rezoning with the some conditions which include: no additional off-street parking spaces are added, Stearns County reviews potential wetland impacts and mitigation, and the property owner is restricted to the site plan approved by the Planning Commission and St. Cloud City Council.
