ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - 2016 is coming to a close and Mayor Dave Kleis shared some of St. Cloud's best and worst moments of the year.

A lot of new projects were focused in downtown in 2016, real estate ventures like The Lofts Condos, restaurants like 7 West Taphouse and Burger Jones.

"We've added to downtown, a lot of new restaurants and establishments," said Kleis. Those projects hinged on construction of one project in particular.

"But we've been able to add a lot of those things because of the expansion of the River's Edge Convention Center, it's final piece and that's the parking ramp, we opened up the parking ramp," he said.

But St. Cloud also had some trying times in 2016.

"The terrorist attack at the mall was one of the worst aspects of 2016, but it brought out some of the best in the community," he said.

The mayor said St. Cloud's first responders shined during the stabbing attack at Crossroads Center in September, where 20-year-old Dahir Adan stabbed 10 victims.

"That was a tremendous response to a very difficult, tragic attack that took place out at the mall," he said.

Kleis also listed Summertime by George, the expansion to the Beaver Island Trail and the recent groundbreaking of the community outpost, or COP House as other highlights of 2016.

The mayor's excited for St. Cloud in 2017, as the St. Cloud Area YMCA and Community Aquatics Center opens in May.
