ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - A nonprofit organization is asking people and businesses to adopt a classroom in the St. Cloud Area School District.

Local Education and Activities Foundation (LEAF) Executive Director Bruce Hentges says the Adopt-A-Classroom program is to help classes get things that might not be in the district’s budget.

"Everything from math manipulatives to mice to feed the snake in the biology lab at the senior high school level."

Last year the program raised around $20,000 for District 742.

Since the Adopt-A-Classroom program started in 2011 more than $110,000 which has supported more than 400 classrooms with grants.

"Education is a team effort and there's a lot of people that are a part of that team."

People or businesses can adopt a classroom for $250 donation and your donation is tax deductible.

"They actually get an adoption certificate and in most cases a nice note from the teacher."

Teachers have to apply for the funds.

When you donate you can choose which classroom to give to or LEAF will choose one for you.

The St. Cloud Area School District has around 10,000 students.
