MINNEAPOLIS (KNSI) - In an effort to boost ridership, fares on the Northstar commuter rail line will be cut one-dollar each way.

The Metropolitan Council approved the temporary reduction, which goes into effect August 1st, and ends April 30th.

It means the cost of a one-way ticket from Big Lake to Target Field will go from seven dollars to six dollars. Fares from the Elk River, Anoka and Coon Rapids stations will also drop by a dollar.

The rail line has fallen short of ridership projections since it began operating in November 2009. In the first five months of this year, ridership is down almost three percent compared with the same period last year.
