ST. PAUL, Minn. (KNSI) - Police in the Twin Cities Metro Area are responding to reports that a police officer was shot during a traffic stop in the area of West St. Paul and Mendota Heights this afternoon.

There is no official confirmation as to what agency the officer belonged to or what led to the shooting. However, KSTP-TV is reporting the officer was a member of the Mendota Heights police department and has died, but that has NOT been officially confirmed by any law enforcement agency.

The shooting happened on Dodd Road near the intersction of Smith Avenue South around 12:30 Wednesday afternoon. Police are believed to be looking for a pair of suspects that fled in a Pontiac. There are conflicting reports as to the color of the vehicle at this point.

An official press conference has been scheduled to take place later this afternoon.

KNSI will update the story as more information becomes available.
