ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Architects unveiled the first plans for the new $83.5-million high school, that St. Cloud residents voted for in November's referendum.

The new school off 33rd Street South will feature learning communities, or clustered classrooms designed for collaboration with different classrooms or subjects.

Athletic fields and activity space will be located on the south end of the property. As you move north, that's where the parking lot and main entrance will be.

"The auditorium and the art space is to your right, you'll go up through the commons, where the food service will be and the common area, sort of the heart of the school, the living room of the school, where the students will gather," Project Manager David Leapaldt said.

The high school will have four gyms, a pool, weight room and an 800 seat auditorium.

"And then as you move farther north, it gets more private you move into the learning communities, there are seven different learning communities that compose a number of classrooms and staff collaboration space," he said.

"At every work session, so monthly, there will be an update from architects and district administration, at that meeting we'll share what's going on and what to expect next," said Superintendent Willie Jett.

If all goes as planned construction will begin in July, and the school will open in the fall of 2019.
