LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (KNSI) The two teenagers shot and killed during an apparent burglary attempt at a Little Falls area home on Thanksgiving Day were well known by local police.

Little Falls Police Chief Greg Schirmers tells the Star Tribune that his office and the Morrison County Sheriff's Office had a combined 19 "contacts" with Haile Kifer this year. Those contacts ranged from traffic stops to reports of suspicious activity and theft.

He said police had contacts of a similar nature with Nick Brady, but declined to be more specific, citing Brady's status as a juvenile when he was killed.

On Wednesday, authorities confirmed there were stolen prescription drugs found in a car Brady was driving the night before he was killed.

The sheriff's office says it continues to investigate what burglaries Kifer and Brady may have been connected to before they were shot and killed during an apparent break-in at the home of Byron Smith.

Smith shot the cousins, saying he feared for his own safety. He's charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
