ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) If you visit a small town Minnesota post office in the days and weeks ahead, you may notice changes in their hours of service.

Pete Nowacki is a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service in Minnesota. He says with the agency swimming in red ink, window hours are being reduced at some post offices in an effort to save money. He says in each case, community meetings are held before any final decisions are made.

In some central Minnesota towns, the meetings have already been held and the changes have taken effect. Brooten is one example, where the new post office window hours are 7:30 am to 1:30 pm. In New Munich, window hours will change to noon to 4:00 pm effective February 9th.

Community meetings have been held recently in Eden Valley, Bowlus, Burtrum, Upsala and Clarissa, but no decisions have been announced yet on changes at those post offices.

Nowacki says the reduced window hours at small town post offices will be phased in over time. It's a process that's not expected to be finished until September 2014.

On a national scale, it's expected to save the Postal Service a half-billion dollars a year.
