ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - The city of Sartell approved design elements of the new Highway 15 interchange project Monday night, but St. Cloud city leaders say they need some more answers before giving their OK to the $17.5 million state traffic plan to alleviate congestion at one of the area's busiest intersections.

City councils in both cities took up the approval of design elements Monday for Minnesota's first diverging diamond interchange set to be built at Highway 15 and Stearns County Road 120.

While Sartell council members ultimately agreed with the proposed design, St. Cloud city leaders asked city staff to contact state transportation officials to find out more about the proposal, particularly regarding bike and pedestrian traffic across a new elevated span of 120 stretching over Highway 15.

Questions were also raised about whether the project would impact businesses near that intersection, including Hennen's Furniture store.

"We want to make sure that there's access. We don't want to adversely affect businesses out there and residents in that community. There were just too way too many questions instead of answers," St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis said. "I, along with all the council members, felt strongly that those questions haven't been asked yet and I think there still needs to be some work done to alleviate those issues."

The project between the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Stearns County and the cities of Sartell and St. Cloud was expected to break ground next year. Completion was expected in 2013.
