MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KNS)  University of Minnesota football coach Jerry Kill announced today that sophomore quarterback Max Shortell will transfer to another school.

Shortell has been a spot starter for the Gophers the past two seasons. This season, the six foot six signal caller from Shawnee Mission, Kansas passed for a team-high 853 yards and six touchdowns.

Kill elected to go with true freshman qaurterback Philip Nelson of Mankato six games into the season.

In a statement released by the university, Kill said, “Max is an outstanding young man, and I respect and understand his decision to transfer. I will help him in any way I can and wish him all the best as he continues his education and football career elsewhere.”

The news of Shortell's transfer comes as the Gophers begin preparations for a December 28th bowl game against Texas Tech in Houston.
