ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - A 10 year sentence was handed down this afternoon for Jesse Smithers, the Sauk Rapids teenager who pleaded guilty in November to killing a college student by punching him in a St. Cloud alley.

The eighteen year-old Smithers pleaded guilty to second-degree unintentional murder in the death of 20 year-old Colton Gleason of Greenfield in September 2012.

Smithers was in a car that went through an alley in the 600-block of 8th Avenue South in St. Cloud. He got out of the vehicle and punched Gleason in the head. Gleason had been walking two women home. Gleason fell after getting punched, hit his head on the ground, and died the next day at St. Cloud Hospital.

At the time of his death, Gleason was a sophomore at Minnesota State, Mankato.

State sentencing guidelines called for a prison term of ten years and eight months.
