ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Sauk Rapids - Rice Public Schools is holding a special election on Tuesday, May 23 asking for voter approval on two ballot questions.

Question 1 would authorize the district to issue $56,945,000 in bonds to address security improvements at all district sites and facilities, construct a new elementary school, construct athletic facilites at the high school and expand early childhood learning space at Hillside Childhood Center and Rice Elementary School.

Question 2 would authorize $30,020,000 in bonds for the reconstruction of Pleasantview Elementary School at its current location.

Approval of question 2 is contingent on the passage of question 1.

"We are not going to be smaller in ten years than we are right now," said Tracey Fierick, Vote Storm Nation Committee member, on with KNSI's Ox in the Afternoon.

"And we are already at capacity in our buildings, so if we don't do something now we are going to end up with larger class sizes."

In terms of the security upgrades, the district says, while each district school has a locked and monitored outside entrance, schools require point of entry construction in order to sequester, control and direct entrants to the building office for vetting.

Approval of both questions would raise property taxes on a $200,000 home $191 annually over 20 years.
