ST. PAUL, Minn. (KNSI) An outdoor ice rink that was damaged by copper thieves has re-opened in St. Paul after two companies donated construction material and labor.

The rink at Phalen Recreation Center opened this weekend. The rink was damaged last month after thieves stole more than 250 feet of copper piping.

As scrap, the pipes were only worth a few hundred dollars. But the city estimated it would have cost $20,000 to replace them.

Two Eagan companies decided to give the city a holiday gift. Officials at Mulcahy Co. Inc. and NAC Mechanical and Electrical Services donated material and labor, saying they wanted to give back to the community.

The replacement parts are plastic-based material with no copper.

The rink attracts 15,000 visitors per season.
