ST. AUGUSTA, Minn. (KNSI) - A St. Augusta hunter was hospitalized after falling out of a deer stand Thursday morning, according to Stearns County authorities.

Daniel Joseph Nelson, 50, of St. Augusta was hunting on his property about 200 yards away from his home on County Road 136 when the accident happened around 8:15 a.m. Thursday, Stearns County Sheriff John Sanner said.

Nelson was on a wood deer stand about 12 feet off the ground when he lost his balance while firing at a deer, then tried to catch himself on a rotten portion of tree that gave way, causing the fall.

Nelson was transported out of the woods by St. Augusta Rescue Squad, then taken by ambulance to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment. The extent of Nelson's injuries were not immediately known.
