ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) – A friendly competition between five St. Cloud area mayors helped the Salvation Army raise over $6,000 dollars to help the homeless, the organization announced Wednesday.

Thanks to the help of anonymous donors, the mayors were able to raise the money last Thursday at multiple locations in the St. Cloud area as part of the Salvation Army's annual holiday Red Kettle drive.

The winner of the competition was Mayor Joe Perske of Sartell, who raised $1,551.66, due in large part to a $1,000 check from one donor given in front of the Sartell Wal-mart.

Just behind Perske was KNSI's own St. Cloud mayor Dave Kleis, raising $1,121.36. In addition to taking his kettle around city offices, Kleis was stationed at Cashwise East Store in St. Cloud.

At the Coborns in Sauk Rapids, mayor Dave Sanders raised $579.22 in four hours. Mayor Sanders was assisted by Tony, Jason, Ross & Jared from the Sauk Rapids Fire Department and Bill Bard.
St. Augusta Mayor Bob Kroll was stationed at the Coborn's Cooper Store and raised $368.84. He was assisted by Jim Diehl.

In the city of Waite Park, mayor Rick Miller raised $155.88 at the Cashwise Waite Park Store. Mayor Miller was assisted by KNSI regular Gary "Z" Zimmerman.

Throughout the Christmas season, the St. Cloud Salvation Army helped families by giving away Christmas toys and food baskets to families in need. In the past eight months The Salvation Army has provided emergency assistance to 3,781 families and individuals, and the volunteer kitchen staff served 20,808 meals during this time.
