ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - A St. Cloud teen's efforts to earn Eagle Scout status could end up serving an even high purpose -- it could help save lives. Michael Dorle, 17, a student at Cathedral High School, has organized a marrow donor registry drive in St Cloud next month to add more donors to the Be The Match registry.

The event is scheduled for Sat., May 12th at St. Cloud's Great River Regional Library, 1300 W. St. Germain Street. The registry event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Every day, thousands of patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases search for a marrow donor who can make their transplant possible. Seventy percent will not find a match in their family and turn to Be The Match Registry, the largest and most diverse registry of volunteer marrow donors in the world.

BONE MARROW DONATION: Help Michael Dorle's bone marrow donation effort through the Be The Match Registry

Michael's father suggested the drive and the teen decided to go forward with the project in honor of his late grandfather Lester Benson. Benson underwent a marrow transplant in July 2000 as treatment to fight multiple myeloma cancer. Lester died three months later, but Michael says his family is grateful for the extra they got to spend with him thanks to that donation.

Potential donors will only spend about 20 minutes to join the registry, first filling out paperwork, then undergoing a painless cheek swab. The sample will then be submitted to the Be the Match database. About 1 in every 540 potential donors will actually be a match for a needy patient.

You can also donate to the effort with a cash contribution. Checks can be made out to Be The Match Foundation", Attn: Kristine Reed, 3001 Broadway, Ste. #100, Minneapolis, MN 55413. Write "Lester" in the memo line to contribute to Michael's total.

The teen said he's already raised more than $2,500 toward the effort.
