ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Stearns County Sentence to Serve program is turning jail time and fines into local parks and hockey rinks.

Rockville city officials wanted to replace their outdoor hockey rink at Rockville Community Park for some time, but never had the financial means to complete the project.

Enter Stearns County Sentence to Serve, a program that allows offenders with court-ordered community service to work on projects instead of pay fines or serve jail time.  Using project labor, the new regulation-size Rockville ice rink was completed this month on the site of the old rink.

"We wouldn't have be able to cover the costs of this project without their help," Rockville park board member Paul Wirth said. "Now we were able to give the community something at the lowest cost possible."

The hockey rink will double as a sand volleyball court in the summer months.

In 2010, adults and juveniles assigned to community service work completed over 56,000 hours of work, valued at more than $450,000, plus the cost savings in reduced jail time.

All Sentence to Serve projects must be completed at a non-profit or government organization. Work sites include churches, schools, cities, townships, county government and parks.

Sites can request work crews by filling out an online STS request form on the Stearns County website or by calling 320-203-6942.
