ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - A group of Tech High School students take first in a competition at St. Cloud State, but not on the ice or the baseball diamond, in the classroom.

Senior Abby Wolters was on Tech's team at SCSU's 50th annual Mathematics Contest.

Wolters is going to the University of Minnesota next fall, and says they outperformed their wildest dreams.

"We took first, it was really fun because we've done it every year since like 7th grade, and I'm a senior, we've never won, we've always gotten fourth place, and this year we just wanted to like place, we wanted to be third and we ended up winning," she said.

Seniors Audrey Nguyen and Maddie Heck were also on the winning team.

Each team had 35 questions ranging from algebra to geometry, that they had to answer in one hour.

Senior Luke Truitt has been on the math team for six years and took part in the competition.

"After about 15 questions some of the questions get exceptionally hard, so you have to allocate your time to the questions you'll be able to get," he said.

Truitt is taking his math background to Duke University next fall to pursue a career in engineering.

More than 1,700 area students competed in the one day competition, with Tech's seniors coming out on top in the team competition.
