ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) -A Severe Thunderstorm Warning was issued for St. Cloud, Stearns County and northwestern Sherburne County as a storm bringing quarter-sized hail and winds up to 70 mph swept over central Minnesota late Sunday evening, the National Weather Service reported.

The warning was in effect until 9:45 p.m.

The warning also covered northeastern Kandiyohi, northern Meeker and northwestern Wright counties.

The Service reported the storm had a history of producing destructive winds and urged residents in those areas to seek shelter inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows.

St. Cloud was also on the extreme eastern edge of a tornado watch area Sunday covering much of central Minnesota, according to the National Weather Service.

In addition to Stearns, the watch covers 21 central and northern Minnnesota counties, including Big Stone, Chippewa, Douglas, Grant, Kandiyohi, Lac Qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Meeker, Otter Tail, Pope, Redwood, Renville, Stevens, Swift, Todd, Traverse, Wadena, Wilkin and Yellow Medicine counties.

The watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. Sunday.
