ST. CLOUD, MN (KNSI) - A town hall meeting will be held at the St. Cloud City Council chambers this afternoon. The topic will be the 2013 city budget due for presentation in early August.

"We've been working on it actually for quite some time but we will be finishing it up and wanting to get input from folks on things they think we should be doing or shouldn't be doing," St. Cloud Mayor Dave Kleis said.

With tough economic conditions still existing in all sectors, including municipal government, the mayor is hinting that the budget will need to be on the conservative side.

"Fortunately we did not have a cut in local government aide, but it is frozen at last year's level and that is on the end of a reduction each of the last four years," Kleis said.

Budget makers will continue to get creative when dealing with the financial challenges the city faces. That could mean more of the partnerships and restructuring that have become commonplace in the city budget in the past few years.

"You'll see some restructuring, you'll see some partnerships, and you'll see some creative ways of funding the essential services that we have," Kleis said. "We have always focused on essential services first; public safety, infrastructure...that will not change in this budget."

If you'd like to weigh in on the budget, today's town hall meeting begins at 4:30. There's also a "budget suggestion" phone line people can call with their opinions. That number is 650-3152.
