MINNEAPOLIS (AP/KNSI) - The Minnesota Vikings start their regular season facing the former face of the franchise.

Running back Adrian Peterson signed with the New Orleans Saints in the off season.

The former Viking is the franchise’s all-time leading rusher with 11,747 yards and 92 rushing touchdowns. He was the league’s MVP in 2012.

Peterson is expected to be in a backup roll with the Saints.

Meanwhile; the Saints Drew Brees and Vikings Sam Bradford are in the relatively awkward position this season of being the rare established NFL quarterback on a path toward free agency.

They're at different stages of their careers with dissimilar track records, but they're both coming off remarkably accurate performances in 2016 for teams that didn't match their excellence.

The Vikings host the Saints on game one of an NFL Monday night double header.

The game starts at 6:10.
