MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KNSI) Bird advocates may be gaining a huge ally in their fight to get specialized glass to prevent bird deaths at the new Vikings stadium.

The Minneapolis City Council will consider Friday whether it will formally support the effort  by groups like the National Audubon Society to push the Vikings to use the special glazed glass at the stadium, which will add $1.1 million to building costs.

The Minnesota Sports Facilities Commission and the Vikings have already told Audubon that they will turn off lights at night once the new stadium is built to help prevent bird collisions.

The Audubon Society has gathered 30,000 petition signatures which it intends to give to the Vikings and the sports authority urging them to reconsider using bird-safe glass.
