MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (KNSI) Xcel Energy has announced it has submitted a proposal to state regulators to add 600 megawatts of wind resources in its upper midwest service territory.

Construction would begin in time to qualify for the extended federal Production Tax Credit.

The additional 600 megawatts of wind power would be enough to serve 180,000 homes, and would lower customer costs by $180-million over the lives of the projects.

At the same time, the projects would reduce carbon emissions by 1.2 million tons each year.

Xcel submitted three separate 200 megawatt projects for review. One would be built near Jamestown, North Dakota under a power purchase agreement with Geronimo Energy. The other wind farms would be built near Windom, Minnesota and near Austin.

If approved by regulators, all three projects are scheduled to be in service by early 2016.
