As Baseball Finally Begins, Schedules Begin to Get Crowded

May 6, 2013 at 8:29 am

After a winter that seemed like it would never end, high school baseball is back in the MSC. With a majority of teams in central Minnesota waiting until late April to get their first game under their belt, now begins a grueling stretch of games to squeeze a season in. Many teams in the MSC are playing double headers, and weekend games just so they can get enough games in to complete the condensed season. With such a condensed schedule, both the players and coaches will have to be creative in how the play this season.

With teams playing double headers and weekend games, coaches will have to use almost everyone on the roster to keep players fresh. Many teams along the Central Lakes conference find themselves playing 18 games in just 24 days. Now factor in travel to away games like St Cloud Tech, they will be on the road to places like Alexandria, Moorhead, Fergus Falls, and Brainerd all within 9 days.

Even after all that I'm sure most players and coaches are just happy to get back on the field and do what they do best. The Central Lakes conference looks like a very tight conference this year, and with a majority of games being against one and other, this season looks like a fun one. Alexandria has jumped out to a quick lead in the conference by beating Willmar in game one of a double header 2-1, and then the bats exploded for 12 runs in a 12-2 rout in game 2.

With the calendar finally turning over to May and the crack of the bat back in the air, many players and coaches in the MSC are just happy to be back, even though the schedule will not be their friends. Lots of late night bus rides and games almost every day will be a toll on most teams, but the team that ends up on top of the heap at the end of the season will have truly earned it.
