Good Luck to Drew and Nick

May 15, 2013 at 2:00 pm

It was an unreal run.  It was almost magical.  It was St Cloud State Hockey breaking through barrier after barrier.  A regular season league title followed by NCAA regional wins over Notre Dame and Miami.  And even though they lost in the national semi-finals, a first ever trip to the Frozen Four.  2012-13 will always be special for Husky fans.  Two of the biggest reasons why were Drew LaBlanc and Nick Jensen.

LaBlanc, returning from a horrific broken leg, led this team both on and off the ice. He was the WCHA Player of the Year and Academic Player of the Year.   And with it he garnered the highest award in college hockey.  The Hobey Baker Award.  Drew instantly signed a deal with the Chicago Blackhawks.   He made his debut late in the regular season but is not on the playoff roster.  But his unreal year continues.  LaBlanc is part of team USA at the World Championships in Finland and Sweden.  Team USA has advanced to the quarterfinal round (at the time this is being written).

Jenson was a rock at defense and with his offensive and puck handling skills became the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year.  All eyes were on Nick after the season to see if he would return for his senior season or move on to the next level as a draft pick of the Detroit Red Wings.  Recently that question was answered when Jensen signed a two year entry level deal with Detroit.  He recently signed to tryout with Detroit's AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids.  He could still get on the ice with the Griffins who are currently in the AHL playoffs.

Thank you both for a ton of great memories.  I consider them more than just players.  I consider them friends.  To both Drew and Nick, good luck and may life, hockey and the future be bright.
