Mid-Season Wrestling Classic
January 12, 2013
St. Cloud Technical High School

This is the 20th annual dual meet tournament named after former St. Cloud Tech teacher, wrestler, coach and referee, Jim Kiffmeyer. Coach Kiffmeyer began his successful career at Tech in 1948 and retired in 1978. His two sons, Kevin and Kurt were both state entrants with Kevin placing 2nd in 1976. Jim's wife Mel resides in St. Cloud and their daughter Kristi lives in the Twin Cities. Jim passed away on January 4,1997 after a courageous battle against cancer. His memory lives on in the Kiffmeyer Duals.

The Kiffmeyer Duals have turned into a Central Minnesota Classic for wrestling fans as many of the top teams in the state have attended this tournament over the years. Hastings, Albert Lea, and Cambridge have been here the past 19 years. Other perennial powers that have attended the Duals include Apple Valley, Foley, Milaca, St. Michael-Albertville, Wheaton, and Paynesville. Last year 44 wrestlers from this tournament qualified for the Minnesota State Tournament and 28 placed in the State Tournament with three of them earning State Championships.

This year there are 34 wrestlers currently ranked in the state, including 6 with a number one ranking, 3 of them being State Champions. They are Tommy Thorn from STMA, Grant Nehring and Mitch Bengtson from St. Cloud Apollo. Teams placing in last year's state tournament were St Michael-Albertville 2nd and Hastings 4th in AAA and Foley 3rd in AA. St. Michael-Albertville is also ranked 3rd nationally after winning the Minnesota Chirstmas Tournament and The Clash Dual meet Tournament.
