MINNEAPOLIS (KNSI) – Justin Morneau and Josh Willingham each launched a three run home run to help back Scott Diamond who took a perfect game into the fifth inning in an 11-0 complete game win for the Minnesota Twins over the Cleveland Indians at Target Field Friday night.

Diamond, en route to his first complete game and first shut-out, held the Indians off the bases until Travis Hafner blooped a two out single to left center in the top of the fifth inning. By then the Twins had already piled up eight runs to command the ballgame. Diamond, now 9-4 on the season, ended his shut-out performance with just three hits allowed, no walks and six strike outs.

The three run homer show began in the bottom of the first inning. Denard Span and Joe Mauer singled and stood on the corners with two outs for Morneau. The former MVP turned on a Josh Tomlin fastball and deposited the offering deep onto the right field concourse to give the twins a 3-0 early edge.

Lighting struck again with two outs in the fourth off the bat of Willingham.

Four straight singles with two outs produced a pair of runs. Then with Ben Revere and Mauer occupying the base-paths Willingham notched his 26th home run of the season with a blast into the bullpen area in deep left center. Willingham also added to his RBI total on the season, a team high 75.

The Twins line-up, a veritable singles machine Friday night with 12 one base knocks, produced three more runs in the sixth thanks to solo safeties from Mauer, Willingham and Ryan Doumit. Mauer, who entered the day third in the American League in batting, ended the game 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Minnesota hosts Cleveland for game two of the series Saturday evening at 6:05. Samuel Deduno (1-0, 3.94) will make his fourth start for the Twins, taking on the Indians’ Justin Masterson (7-8, 4.12). The Twins are now 41-58 and sit in last place in the AL Central standings.
