The Western Michigan Broncos scored a third period goal to force overtime and an eventual shootout, which they won in six rounds against the St. Cloud State Huskies in Kalamazoo, MI on Saturday night.

After a scoreless first period, the Huskies got on the scoreboard first with a goal from Kalle Kossila at the 15:29 mark of the second period. It was Kossila’s second goal of the season, and the Huskies would take a 1-0 lead into the third period.

Early in the third, Huskies goaltender Charlie Lindgren gave up a rare rebound which allowed Will Kessel to capitalize and tie the game at 1-1. The Huskies outshot the Broncos 15-9 through the first two periods. Lindgren saw more shots in the third period than he saw in the first two periods combined, as the Broncos tallied 12 shots-on-goal in the third period alone. But Lindgren stopped all but one and helped force overtime.

Overtime saw both teams shoot on goal twice, but nothing went past either goaltender. It took until the sixth round of the shootout for a goal to occur when Josh Pitt beat Lindgren. The Huskies had a chance, but failed and the Broncos won the shootout to gain the extra point in the NCHC standings.

Western Michigan takes on Miami next week while the Huskies continue their NCHC schedule as they host the University of North Dakota next weekend at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. Game One begins Friday night at 7:37 p.m. and Game Two starts Saturday at 7:07 p.m.. Both games can be heard on Lite Rock 99.9 and, with pregame shows beginning at 7:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. respectively.
