ST. CLOUD, MN (KNSI) – The sixth ranked DIII junior college baseball team in the entire country resides right here in St. Cloud, MN and will play for a regional title Saturday and with it a first ever berth in the National Junior College Athletics Association DIII World Series.

The St. Cloud Technical and Community College baseball team notched their 40th win of the season Friday, a 3-2 decision over Riverland Community College at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. The Cyclones, 40-12 on the season, will await the winners from the elimination side of the Region 13 bracket, before playing for the championship at 2 p.m. Saturday.

After surviving for a 1-0 victory in the second game of the tournament, the Cyclones again used their pitching staff to secure their Friday win. Richfield, MN native Corey Fitzgerald made the start for the Cyclones and allowed just two runs on six hits, striking out two without issuing a walk. Following the solid Fitzgerald performance, St. Cloud Cathedral grad Matt Dietman worked a perfect seventh to secure the win, recording one strike-out.

As he's done all season, Sherburn, MN native Jonathan Traetow keyed the offensive attack for the Cyclones against Riverland on Friday. He didn't wait long to do it either. After a two out walk in the first, Traetow launched a 2-2 pitch over the right field fence to put SCTCC out front early. The outfielder went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and a run scored on the day. Second baseman Dan Sargent also had an RBI on, driving in the decisive tally with a triple in the top of the third.

The win puts the Cyclones just a Saturday victory away from securing a place in the NCJAA Division III World Series in Tyler, Texas May 19-25th.
