ST. CLOUD, MN (SCSU)– St. Cloud State University Director of Athletics Heather Weems announced today that Eric Hanenberger has been named head coach of the Husky men's and women's cross country and track and field teams, effective Aug. 15.

"I want to thank Heather Weems and the search committee for their diligence during the hiring process," said Hanenberger. "My wife and I are excited to put down roots in St. Cloud and are very excited to join the Husky family. I am ready to guide the team, not only to greater success on the athletic field but also in the classroom and community."

Hanenberger has been the assistant men's and women's track and field coach at North Dakota State University since the fall of 2010. His coaching areas with the Bison included the men's and women's long jump, triple jump, high jump, men's sprinters and long hurdles. He also was the co-meet director and meet manager for all collegiate home meets and high school meets held at NDSU.

"Eric comes highly recommended, has been mentored by nationally recognized coaches, and had success working with a variety of events at his previous institutions," said Weems. "He brings fresh ideas and energy to our program, and has demonstrated his ability to coach student-athletes to success while helping them to balance academic and social demands."

Hanenberger's success at NDSU is reflected in the honors and awards earned by his student-athletes which includes 19 All-Conference individual performers and six All-Conference relays, four individual and four relay conference champions, and five NCAA Division I first round qualifiers. He also coached the 2011 Men's Indoor and Outdoor Freshman Newcomer of the Meet and the 2011 Women's Outdoor Freshman Newcomer of the Meet.

As a team, the Bison won seven conference championship team titles and the coaches won three indoor and four outdoor Conference Co-Coaching Staff of the Year awards.

Prior to joining the NDSU staff, Hanenberger spent six years at the University of Northern Iowa. Two years were spent as an assistant coach working with the sprints, relays, hurdles, jumps and multi-events. He also served as the program's recruiting coordinator and meet manger for all college and high school meets held at UNI. His first four years with the Panthers were served as a volunteer assistant and graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach.

From 2003 to 2005, Hanenberger was the assistant sprint coach at Eastview High School in Apple Valley.
Hanenberger graduated from Northern Iowa in December of 2004 with degrees in marketing and non-teaching exercise science. He received his master's degree in exercise science from Northern Iowa in 2007.
