ST. CLOUD, Minn. (SCSU) - The #9 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 NCHC) battled back to earn a 2-2 tie against non-conference rival Bemidji State University (0-1-1, 0-0-0 WCHA) on Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

The game completed the season opening weekend for the Huskies, who will enjoy a bye week before travelling to to Hamilton, N.Y. on Oct. 25-26 for games at Colgate University.

The tie game also provided SCSU fans with their first taste of the new shootout procedure that will be used this year by the NCHC. Bemidji State went on to win the shootout by a 3-2 margin. The Huskies' Joey Benik opend the shootout with a goal and Kalle Kossila also had a shootout goal to force the sudden-death shootout round, which Bemidji won when Rado Illo scored against SCSU netminder Charlie Lindgren.

The game will go in the books as a tie but the new shootout procedure will determine points for the NCHC regular season standings when two league teams are playing this season.

Bemidji State opened the evening's scoring in the first period with an even strength goal by Phil Brewer at 16:28. The lone assist on the play was credited to Graem McCormack. In the second period, Nate Arentz added BSU's second tally with a goal at 8:01 with an assist from Brewer.

Down 2-0 heading into the final period, SCSU charged back early in the third with a goal by senior defender Kevin Gravel at 2:02. Lindgren gained his first collegiate point on the play with the goalie assist. This was Gravel's fourth career goal at St. Cloud State.

SCSU senior Nic Dowd added his second goal of the young season at 9:46 with a power play tally that knotted the score at 2-2. Sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski and junior defender Andrew Prochno both posted assists on the play for the Huskies.

The two teams then completed regulation time and the OT session with shutout hockey. In the game, BSU's Andrew Walsh tallied 44 saves while Lindgren had 19 saves for the Huskies. Overall, SCSU outshot the Beavers 46-21. On the power play, SCSU was 1-6 in the game and BSU was 0-4.

The Huskies will hit the road on Oct. 25-26 for the games at Colgate and then stay on the road with games at North Dakota on Nov. 1-2. SCSU will return to the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center on Nov. 8-9 for a NCHC series against Miami. For complete ticket information for these important games, please visit
