St. Cloud State University Director of Athletics Heather Weems has announced that Eric Rud will be introduced as the University's new women's hockey coach at a press conference on Thursday, May 29.

(The press conference will take place in the Husky Den of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 29. The public is invited and parking is available in K-Lot.)

A former assistant coach with the St. Cloud State University men's hockey team from 2005 to 2010, Rud has served as an assistant men's hockey coach at Colorado College since 2011. Between his time at St. Cloud State and Colorado College, Rud worked for one season as the head coach and general manager of the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers in 2010-11.

"We welcome Eric back to St. Cloud State University," Weems said. "The caliber of our candidate pool for the women's head coaching position made this a difficult decision, but one that comes with great excitement. Eric brings extensive hockey knowledge as well as incredible commitment to student-athlete development and support.

"He has a strong understanding of both recruiting and continuing skill development, which are important to the future of our program. I am confident our young women will find in Eric a wonderful mentor, and that our program will regain competitive success under his leadership. It is also rewarding to welcome his family back to St. Cloud, where they enjoyed being a part of the community."

"I am thrilled to be the next head coach for the St. Cloud State women's hockey program. To coach in the WCHA against some of the top programs and coaches in the country is an exciting opportunity. I look forward to meeting our current players and incoming recruits as we get ready for the start of the upcoming season," Rud said.

"In addition, our family is very excited to be rejoining the St Cloud community and will enjoy reconnecting with some great people in the area. "

A graduate of Colorado College, Rud was a two-time team captain and two-time WCHA Defensive Player of the Year for the Tigers during his collegiate playing career. He went on to play professional hockey from 1997 to 2002, and served as a player assistant coach with the Florida Everblades in 1999-2000 and with the Idaho Steelheads from 2000 to 2002.

He joined the coaching ranks as an assistant with the USHL's Cedar Rapids Roughriders from 2002 to 2004 and was an assistant coach at Colorado College in 2004-05.

Rud joined Bob Motzko's staff on the men's hockey team at St. Cloud State in 2005. At SCSU, Rud recruited several Husky standouts including notables Ryan Lasch (Hobey Baker Award top 10 finalist), Andreas Nodl, Garrett Roe, Drew LeBlanc (Hobey Baker Award winner), Nick Jensen and Nic Dowd (Hobey Baker Award top 3 finalist). In Rud's time at St. Cloud State, the Huskies advanced to the NCAA tournament three times and also advanced to the championship game of the NCAA West Regional in 2010.

He has worked extensively with the USA Hockey program throughout his career and served as the head coach of the 2008 USA U-17 boys team in the Slovakia Four Nations Cup and the 2009 USA U-18 boys team at the Czech Republic Ivan Hlinka Cup.

Rud will become the fourth coach in the history of the women's hockey program at St. Cloud State University. The Huskies' first year of women's hockey was 1998-99 and they joined the Western Collegiate Hockey Association at the start of the 1999-00 season. In 2013-14, the Huskies were 4-27-5 and 3-21-4 in WCHA play.

A native of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Rud prepped at Simley High School. Rud and his wife Amy have three children Sam, Gabbie and Max.
