ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - It was a special night in Sartell as a big crowd packed into the high school gymnasium for a basketball game in honor of former player Tom Bearson, who was murdered during his freshman year in college in 2014.

'Hoopin' for Tommy B Night', a fundraiser for the Tom Bearson Foundation, surpassed Greg Bearson's expectations.

"I think it says so much about the Sartell community and central Minnesota in general, that there's so many wonderful, compassionate people here that are willing to support people that have had difficulties in their lives like we've had," said Bearson.

"It means everything to us, it's a great source of strength and it's really the reason we started the Tom Bearson Foundation."

Most of the people in the crowd could be seen wearing green (Tom's favorite color) Tommy B Hoopin' In Heaven T-shirts and both Sartell and Rocori teams wore the shirts during warmups and on the bench.

Greg Bearson told KNSI News that he and his wife are confident that police will find out who killed their son.

"We were blessed to have 18 years with him, and he was an incredible gift. Sometimes you wonder how you can move on when you lose someone as important to you as your son, but Tom has given us a lot of signs in the last 15 months that he's ok, and that really is one of the things that is helping us get through it."

Bearson was in his freshman year at North Dakota State University when his body was found in a commercial lot in Moorhead in September of 2014.

His manner of death has been ruled Homicide.
