ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - The Minnesota State Fair, also called the Great Minnesota Get-Together, got started Thursday morning.

Minnesota State Fair spokesperson Danielle Dullinger, a St. Cloud native, says one new attraction is a 156-foot-tall Ferris wheel called the Great Big Wheel

"You literally can't miss it, it's huge. It's going to just give these impressive views of the fairgrounds but beyond the fairgrounds of the Twin Cities as a whole, it's a super cannot miss this year."

The Great Big Wheel is on the north end of the fairgrounds.

Dullinger has some advice for new comers to the 320-acre state fairgrounds.

"Proper footwear, come early in the morning and prepare for a long day. You can bring your own water and you can pack your own snacks."

If you don't want to bring anything with you there's plenty to eat and drink at the fair with more than 500 foods including 31 new foods.

She says the best way to navigate the fairgrounds is by downloading the Minnesota State Fair app to your smartphone.

More than 1.9 million visitors come to the fair each year.

Last year the fair set a new all-time attendance record with 1,943,719 visitors during the 12-day event.

The fair’s daily attendance record was set on a Saturday in 2016 when
260,374 people visited.

The Minnesota State Fair is older than the State of Minnesota with the first territorial fair dating back to 1854.

The Minnesota State Fair has been held in its present location in Falcon Heights since 1885.

The state fair is open from 6 a.m. to midnight through Labor Day.
